Coloring through COVID
In 2020, like most people, I began working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic. The sudden changes and uncertainty of this time led to a feeling of being creatively blocked, but sometimes what helps break through is just putting pencil down on paper. Coloring pages can provide an entry into creative exploration, allowing creativity from a clear starting point, so I wanted to make artworks with a sense of depth and dimension that would be physically fun to color in. Maybe these weird landscapes reflect something of the shifting and unfamiliar world I was perceiving? Are they abstract representations of the microscopic dramas taking place in the air and our bodies? All I know is that these creations were cathartic to make, allowing me to scribble away some of my worries during this strange time.
Using my favorite 3D tools of Rhino and Grasshopper, I arranged geometric shapes within abstract landscapes, adding contours well spaced for coloring in. Artwork is exported as vectors for clean lines and the option to size up and print easily. I intentionally avoided creating huge empty areas that take forever to scribble and fill in, and the graduated shapes revealed by the contours are easy and fun to color.
