Environment & Experience Design

Personal Project In collaboration with Marilee SweeneyARborist
During the COVID lockdown, I dove into a week-long design sprint with my friend Marilee Sweeney to design an app using Adobe XD for a Creative Jam competition. Without any formal training in UX design at the time, I relied on brand and experience design principles while quickly learning to use XD as a collaborative design and prototyping tool in order to develop a unique and innovative concept and demonstration.

The brief was to design an app for social good, so we drew on our love of nature and experience volunteering with environmental groups to design ARborist- an AR app to educate the public on the urban heat island effect and plan tree planting to combat the higher temperatures found in neighborhoods where divestment and historical inequity leads to a lower percentage of tree canopy. A key feature was an AR function, to visually place a tree and see how it could grow and provide more shade over time, alongside projected temperature reduction and information on care.

ARborist was chosen as a top 10 finalist from a long list of worldwide submissions to the competition, so we had the opportunity to demonstrate it live to a panel of judges livestreamed publicly. I’m especially proud that we were selected since our app was the top 10 submission designed by interdisplinary designers rather than professional UX specialists, and it was an incredible opportunity to demonstrate the universal application of experience design and explore how technology can be used as a tool for community.
